Pokemon Scarlet & Violet announced a series of Tera Raid Battles featuring the Four Treasures of Ruin, which, for the first time, will be obtainable as their Shiny versions in a special community effort event. Wo-Chien is the first of these Legendaries featured in 5-Star Tera Raid Battles, and players need to prepare to beat him starting July 22, 2025, at 5:00 PM PDT.
Pokemon Scarlet & Violet: Strongest Paldea Pokemon, Ranked
Here are Paldea's very best Pokemon that have appeared so far in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet.
If trainers are looking for the best strategy to beat this Pokemon and contribute to the community Milestone to receive a special reward, they should take a look at this guide, which offers tons of good tips to beat this Raid with ease. With information on Wo-Chien's Tera-type, strengths, weaknesses, moveset, best counters, and strategies to defeat it in Tera Raid Battles.
Wo-Chien Strengths and Weaknesses in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet
Wo-Chien, the first of the Four Treasures of Ruin, is from the Dark-Grass type, but in the Pokemon Scarlet & Violet Tera Raid Battle, it will have the Grass Tera-type, so it will be weak to Fire, Flying, Ice, Bug, and Poison-type moves. On the other hand, it will resist Ground, Water, Grass, and Electric moves.
On one hand, this makes it easier to pick a decent attacker to cause STAB damage, but players also need to keep in mind that Wo-Chien will keep its moveset from the Dark-type, and it has a lot of nasty moves such as Foul Play that can do lots of damage. It will also have Giga Drain, and since it will be of the Grass Tera-type, its effectiveness will be greatly increased, thus healing it more and making this combat more difficult at each turn. Wo-Chien might also have access to Ruination, a vicious move that reduces the HP of the target by 50% of its current HP.
Giga Drain is a no-contact Sp. Attack Move that causes 75 Damage with a 100% Accuracy Rate, and at the same time recovers 65% of the damage inflicted. Wo-Chien will spam this attack frequently, and since it's empowered by its Grass Tera-type, it will cause even more damage and restore even more health each time. Try to finish the battle fast to prevent him from regaining full health.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Reveal Shiny Legendary Tera Raids, But There's A Major Catch
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet players have an opportunity to add Shiny Legendary creatures to their collections, but the offer comes with some caveats.
Best Counters For Wo-Chien Tera Raid Battle In Pokemon Scarlet & Violet
Picking the best Counters for Wo-Chien Tera Raid Battle in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet won't be an easy task, but there are a few Fire-type attackers like Cinderace that could do well (if players managed to catch the Fire Tera-type Cinderace from previous Tera-Raids) or Ogerpon Heartflame Mask, that can destroy most Grass-type Teras thanks to its Ivy-Cudgel/Swords Dance combo.
Players can also pick Baxcalibur, since it has powerful Ice-type moves that can cause tons of damage, plus the Ice/Dragon dual type makes it more resilient to Grass-type moves, and since Wo-Chien might be spamming Giga Drain all the time, it could become the best Defensive strategy. Corviknight is a decent Flying-type Attacker that also resists Grass-type moves x4 thanks to its Steel-type. With access to Fake Tears, Screech, and Fly. It also happens to have access to Roost, a recovery move that is quite unusual in this type, but that helps greatly during Tera Raid battles.
Ogerpon is a decent Attacker, but it lacks sustain. Since it cannot equip other items besides the Hearthflame Mask for this battle, it is strongly recommended that players bring a supporter Pokemon that can use recovery moves on the team. Or double down with a full offensive strategy to wipe Wo-Chien in a single turn.
How To Beat Wo-Chien Tera-Raid Battle in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet
To beat Wo-Chien Tera Raid Battle in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, players should pick the best counters, but if they want a decent strategy to beat this 5-Star Raid faster, they can check out the following recommendations and use them during battle:
- Ogerpon Hearthflame Ivy Cudgel: As a primed Physical Attacker, Ogerpon Hearthflame deals tons of damage to Grass-types, and thanks to its Mold-Breaker ability, it will become a powerful Fire-type empowering even more its Ivy Cudgel unique move, which also takes on the Fire-type if Ogerpon is wearing the Hearthflame Mask. Use Sunny Day to empower Fire-type moves, then follow up with Swords Dance to increase Ogerpon's Attack twice, then unleash Ivy Cudgel to chip down Wo-Chien's health. Once Wo-Chien switches off Status Changes and shields up, it will be time to Terastalize and break it apart using the same strategy. Ogerpon's moveset is pretty straightforward and does decent damage, plus, thanks to its Fire/Grass Dual-typing, it will resist most of Wo-Chien's moves.

- Cinderace with Pyro Ball/Sunny Day: Cinderace is a fast attacker, but it is also quite squishy, so mind that while battling Wo-Chien. Using Shell Bell as a held item can help Cinderace hold out for longer, and with its Pyro Ball/Sunny Day/Swords Dance combo, it can cause some serious damage. If accompanied by Hearthflame Ogerpon, they can both benefit from Sunny Day, making them a fearsome combo that will chip down Wo-Chien's health at a faster rate. Bring Terablast to even the odds when Cinderace Terastalizes.
Wo-Chien's Ability 'Tablets of Ruin' will reduce all the Pokemon's Attack by 25%, so think carefully on a good strategy that counters this debuff, which is active at all times during combat, even when Wo-Chien clears all 'status change' effects.

- Support/Defensive Corviknight: Corviknight becomes quite Tanky thanks to its x4 Resistance to Giga Drain. Combining this with access to Defense-lowering moves like Screech and Fake Tears, it becomes a powerful addition to the Wo-Chien Tera Raid Battle team. Corviknight is better when accompanied by strong attackers, and if it has access to Roost, it has the perfect suitability for a long battle. Add Leftovers to the mix, to aid Corviknight with Health regain each turn, and complete with its Ability Mirror Armor to reflect stat-lowering moves and Fly for a more defensive play.

- Tank Baxcalibur: As the Pseudo-Legendary of Gen 9, Baxcalibur is a complete menace in terms of Raw Power, but it is also good at Defense thanks to Ice Body. It can activate some extra Defense while the weather is snowy, so it becomes quite tanky thanks to Snowscape, which causes it to recover HP every turn while Snowstorm is active. This strategy is incompatible with Fire-type based teams, which greatly benefit from having Sunny Day, but it compensates with Physical Attack thanks to a combination of Icicle Crash, Swords Dance, and Leer.

The Four Treasures of Ruin Tera Raid event will run from Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at 5:00 PM PDT to Sunday, September 14, 2025, at 4:59 PM PDT, and Shiny Wo-Chien, Shiny Chien-Pao, Shiny Ting-Lu, and Shiny Chi-Yu will appear (in that order) in 5-star Tera Raid Battles.
Players will require an active Nintendo Online subscription to participate in Online Tera Raid Battles, but all players can try to tackle this event solo (alongside AI-controlled support trainers).
