Metagross is one of the various pseudo-legendary Pokemon that you can catch in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet. Unlike most of its pseudo-legendary counterparts, Metagross is a Steel/Psychic-type Pokemon rather than a Dragon-type. Its amazing base Attack and Defense and overall great stats make it extremely useful in the double-battle style of the Blueberry Academy in Indigo Disk.
There are various ways of getting Metagross and its pre-evolutions, Beldum and Metang, in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet. Unfortunately, catching Beldum or Metang can be a challenge in itself. Even if you don't plan on using the Beldum-line, you'll need to catch them if you intend on filling out Indigo Disk's Blueberry Pokedex.
Pokemon Scarlet & Violet: How to Change Throwing Styles
Throwing Styles can help you stand out from other trainers in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet --here's how to get and change them.
Where to Find Beldum & Metang
Polar Biome
You can find a wild Beldum on the cliff between Polar Plaza and the Polar Outdoor Classroom 1, which is the same area where you can catch a wild Duraludon. The quickest way to reach Beldum is to leave from either one of these fast-travel points and head north (Polar Outdoor Classroom) or south (Polar Plaza).
Another place you can find a Beldum and Metang is in the southern cave of the Polar Biome. You can reach this by heading east from Central Plaza. The southern cave is next to the wall dividing the Coastal Biome and the Polar Biome. Refer to the marker where the arrows are pointing in the above image for the exact location.
Below is a video of how to reach the cliffs between Polar Plaza and Polar Outdoor Classroom 1:
Catch Beldum, Metang, and Metagross in Tera Raids
The Beldum-line also appears in the Tera Raids of Terarium. Like other Tera Raid Pokemon, Beldum/Metang/Metagross will have a 100% catch rate if you manage to defeat one in Tera Raids.
You can find each one in the following:
- Beldum: 3-star Tera Raids
- Metang: 4-star Tera Raids
- Metagross: 5-star Tera Raids, *6-star Tera Raids
* Since Indigo Disk can only be accessed if you have completed "The Way Home" and the Teal Mask's story, you should have access to 5-star Tera Raids before you step foot into Terarium. If you want 6-star Tera Raids, you will need to go an extra step and clear the Academy Ace Tournament, which is the postgame for Scarlet/Violet's main story.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet: How to Get Meloetta
Meloetta is a Mythical Pokemon that can be caught in The Indigo Disk DLC. Encountering it is not simple, so here's what you must do.
Other Methods of Getting Beldum
Transfer using Pokemon HOME
You can also get Beldum and its evolutions by catching them in other Pokemon games, then using Pokemon HOME to transfer them to Scarlet/Violet. Beldum can be found in the following Pokemon games, which share compatibility with Scarlet/Violet:
- Pokemon Sword/Shield (Crown Tundra DLC)
- Pokemon Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl
- Pokemon GO
Since Beldum will have the same catch rate in Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl and Sword/Shield, you may have better luck catching one in Pokemon GO. Fortunately, Beldum's catch rate isn't anywhere near as low as it is in the mainline Pokemon. You may have better luck seeing one in GO during snowy weather. If you're cathing it in GO, then you'll want to link your Pokemon HOME and Pokemon GO account.
- Going into Settings in Pokemon GO.
- Select Connected Devices and Services.
- Choose Pokemon HOME, and select Beldum/Metang/Metagross.
- Transfer the Pokemon to HOME.
- On the Switch, open Pokemon HOME to receive the GO-Pokemon, then move them from the Basic Box to the PC Boxes in Scarlet/Violet.
If you're transferring Beldum from Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl or Sword/Shield, you'll just need to open the respective game in HOME, move them to the Basic Box, then open Scarlet/Violet (in HOME) to place them in a PC Box. Save changes and exit to ensure that the transfer is successful.
The last way to get Beldum and its evolutions is to trade with another player. To use Scarlet/Violet's online features, you will need a Nintendo Online Membership. The lowest cost for a subscription is 3.99 for one month. If you have online access, you can simply go through the Poke Portal or use the Union Circle to conduct the trade.
Make sure to choose Link Trade and either Set Code or input a Code from the person you are trading with to connect.

In Pokemon Scarlet & Violet's Indigo Disk DLC, you can take control of your Pokemon with the Synchro Machine, but where can you find it?
Tips for Catching Beldum & Metang
Which Poke Ball Should You Use?
The frustrating thing about Beldum and Metang is their extremely low catch rate. At 3%, they're just as easy to catch as a Legendary Pokemon. Thankfully, Beldum's Take Down move has been replaced with Tackle, so it loses the chance of knocking itself out. Furthermore, the replacement of Hail with Snow means Beldum can't be KO'd by the weather.
There are ways to make catching Beldum or Metang eas ier, but you'll still want to bring a Pokemon that can chip away at its HP without knocking it out. You can always save your game before approaching one, too.
Here are some pointers for catching Beldum and Metang:
- Catch Beldum (or Metang) during the nighttime, or catch the ones that spawn in the southern cave of the Polar Biome (both locations shown above). This is so you can use Dusk Balls. A Dusk Ball's catch modifier is 3x if used at night or in a cave.
- Sneak up on the Beldum/Metang and throw your Pokemon at its back. To make this easier, lock onto Beldum/Metang with ZL-button. You can crouch with the B-button to lower the chances of it hearing you.
- Stock up on Ultra Balls, Dusk Balls (if catching one at night/in the cave), and Timer Balls.
- Bring a Pokemon that can inflict a status ailment such as Paralysis, but avoid Burn.
If you're still struggling, you may want to try your luck with Tera Raids. Beldum spawns in 3-star Tera Raids, which should be extremely easy for you to clear at this point in Scarlet/Violet. As mentioned earlier, Pokemon in Tera Raids have a 100% catch rate, and 5/6-star Tera Raids could be housing a Metagross, allowing you to bypass the trouble of evolving Beldum and Metang.
Pokemon Scarlet & Violet: How to Catch Alolan Form Pokemon (Indigo Disk DLC)
Once you meet up with Lacey and the class at the Coastal Biome, you'll need to find an Alolan Form Pokemon for the teacher.
How to Evolve Beldum & Metang
What Level Does Beldum (& Metang) Evolve?
Beldum will evolve into Metang at level 20; Metang will evolve into Metagross at level 45. Since the Pokemon levels in Terarium are very high leveled, both Beldum and Metang will be well beyond their evolution level. Just give it a Rare Candy to elevate its level by one to trigger the evolution.
If you caught Beldum in a 3-star Tera Raid, it will be level 35. You'll then need to level it up as a Metang so that it can reach level 45. If you catch Metang in a Tera Raid, it will be level 45.
