On the Pokemon TCG Pocket subreddit, user Ok-Pie-3581 shared a concept for promotional cards inspired by the Base Set. The mockup alludes to the 30th anniversary of the Pokemon franchise, which will occur in 2026. They feature a digital version of the iconic Pokemon TCG expansion packs with Charizard, Venusaur, and Blastoise on the covers, achieving an impressive result. Another image shows what the cards up for grabs would look like, with players adding Clefairy, Alakazam, Blastoise, Venusaur, and Charizard promo cards to their collections, all with the same artwork as the physical version.

The Base Set's Important Place in Pokemon Trading Card Game History

While fans today are familiar with famous Pokemon TCG expansions such as Evolving Skies, 151, and Team Up, it all started with the Base Set. Released in 1999, this is the first expansion to ever hit shelves with 102 cards featuring Gen 1 Pokemon and Gym Leaders. Some of these cards have become highly coveted by players, with the ones this fan used in their mockup being among the most expensive in the expansion. The priciest of all is Charizard Holo, which, according to PokeData, a raw copy coming from the first edition of the Base Set can cost an incredible $4,950.

Some Redditors liked the idea, with one saying they would return to playing Pokemon TCG Pocket if such a booster pack was released, while other players were not very excited because they got “tired of Kanto.” The developers have not yet shown any plans to introduce promo cards inspired by the Base Set. However, since Pokemon TCG Pocket has numerous cards inspired by the physical versions, players wait to see if this kind of set could become a reality in future updates.
