Summary

  • The Celestic Town Elder card allows players to revive knocked-out cards, opening up strategic possibilities.
  • The Triumphant Light expansion adds 96 new cards, including special illustrations and borders.
  • Players are split on Celestic Town Elder's effectiveness, with concerns about limitations for evolved Pokemon.

Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket has introduced its first card that allows players to revive other previously knocked-out cards from the discard pile. While past releases have included cards that let players bring back energy that had been sent to the discard pile, Pokemon TCG Pocket's Celestic Town Elder opens up a lot of strategic possibilities that could help players come back from a losing situation.

The Triumphant Light expansion for Pokemon TCG Pocket was launched just a few days ago. Announced at the Pokemon Presents livestream event on February 27 and introduced in the game the very next day, the new expansion brings a grand total of 96 new cards to the game, with 75 standard cards and the rest made up of variations on some Pokemon and trainers that feature special illustrations and borders.

Pokemon TCG Pocket Players Want More Deck Slots

Fans of Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket are asking the developers to introduce more deck slots to the game, accounting for its growing cardpool.

One of the new Supporter cards in Pokemon TCG Pocket, Celestic Town Elder's role is simple but well-defined. Playing this card will allow a player to take one Basic Pokemon card, defined as any Pokemon card that is not an evolution from a previous form or a fossil, and place it directly back into their hand. As defined by the rules of the game, only one Supporter card can be played per turn, making Celestic Town Elder a little less versatile than general Trainer cards, but it does give players an immediate second chance to deploy a Pokemon that had been knocked out in a previous round provided that they've got room for it on their bench.

Pokemon TCG Pocket's Celestic Town Elder Opens Up Strategic Possibilities

Fans seem split on just how effective Celestic Town Elder will be as players continue to accumulate cards and build decks centered around the Triumphant Light expansion. On the one hand, the new Arceus EX card in Pokemon TCG Pocket shows up as a centerpiece of Triumphant Light in a way that no expansion card has before, with multiple powerful new Pokemon having abilities that only come into play when Arceus or Arceus EX is deployed in the active spot or on the bench. Some fans feel Celestic Town Elder was introduced in this expansion specifically to keep Arceus cards on the playmat and keep these other Pokemon living up to their potential.

But there is also concern about the card's limitations. Pokemon with evolutionary lines seem like a poor fit for this card, as only their Basic card will be revived while the Stage 1 and Stage 2 evolutions will be left in the discard pile. Celestic Town Elder could be used to revive some powerful Basic Pokemon EX cards, but most of them require a lot of set-up time as players spend multiple rounds reattaching energy to them, and if an EX card is in the discard pile already, it means the opponent is only one point away from victory.
