Summary
- Some Pokemon TCG Pocket cards reference main series games.
- One card depicts Spearow on Route 16.
- Professor Oak's lab and Gym backgrounds on support cards are nods to FireRed/LeafGreen.
Pokemon TCG Pocket players have discovered several references to the games in the main series on some of the cards. Being a Pokemon TCG-inspired game, several Pokemon TCG Pocket cards are reminiscent of the physical ones because they have the same artwork, such as Poke Flute, the Pikachu card released with the Mythical Island mini-set.
However, Pokemon TCG Pocket also has several references and Easter eggs, with some being more obvious, such as the Machamp ex and the Alakazam rare. These Pokemon TCG Pocket full art cards not only have the same visual style but also depict the two pocket monsters battling, something common in Pokemon TCG cards. An adorable Easter egg can be found on the Ditto full art card, which has two Ditto in the middle of a forest and others camouflaged as leaves, one as a bush, and one as a Caterpie high up in a tree.
Pokemon TCG Pocket Leak Hints at Trading Feature Restrictions
A Pokemon TCG Pocket leak suggests the highly-anticipated player trading feature may be restricted to only a few card rarities.
The Pokemon TCG Pocket community has discovered even more fun nods, one on the Spearow card. Shared by Redditor asch_win, they note that the artwork shows Spearow on a patch of grass with some buildings around it. This location corresponds to Route 16 of FireRed, the Pokemon Red remake, being a point near Celadon City where players have a 30% chance of finding Spearow levels 20-22. The buildings players see in the card art are the green building and the Celadon City department store, a location that has appeared in different Pokemon games, where players buy battle items, TMs, and more.
Pokemon TCG Players Discover Neat References to Other Pokemon Games
In a second post by the same Redditor, they point out the references on the Pokemon TCG Pocket support cards. These locations, originally seen in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, show Professor Oak in his laboratory. The backgrounds of Misty, Erika, Blaine, Giovanni, Sabrina, and Lt. Surge cards show them in their Gyms in Kanto, with the Blue and Leaf cards having backgrounds similar to their appearances in the games.
While the OP's discoveries delighted other Pokemon TCG Pocket players, some shared other references found in the card game. One of the comments noted that the background of Brock's card is a possible nod to Digglett Cave, a place where the character is seen in HeartGold and Silver, the remakes of the Gen 2 Pokemon games. Two other players mentioned the Electrode and Zapdos ex full art cards, which show the critters at the Kanto Power Plant. Being a franchise known for its countless references, players have a high chance of finding even more Easter eggs in Pokemon TCG Pocket.
