Pokemon TCG Pocket's new Eevee Grove set came out just a few days ago, but between the fact that it's a mini expansion with only a handful of really good cards for competitive and the fact that it came out before the weekend, there were already several tournaments with the new cards in the meta. Some great Flareon Ex decks in Pokemon TCG Pocket started to surface online, with them being a mix of the two different versions of Flareon in the expansion, or Flareon Ex with Turtonator or even Incineroar Ex. Much like its Fire-type Eeveelution counterpart, Sylveon Ex is sitting right at the top of the meta alongside a powerful Genetic Apex card.

Many cards introduced with Genetic Apex are out of the meta now, as more powerful cards with similar effects came out, or simply the meta evolved past them. As unfortunate as this may be for those who put an effort into collecting the first set of the game, it's common for trading card games to make older cards feel less powerful than current ones. Still, Pokemon TCG Pocket's Greninja is very much alive and kicking despite being among the oldest cards in the game, and the new Sylveon Ex deck that is winning tournaments online proves that.

Why Pokemon TCG Pocket's Greninja is Still Meta in Eevee Grove

Pokemon TCG Pocket's Greninja has been a powerful card since its inception, thanks to its Water Shuriken ability, which allows players to deal 20 damage to any opposing Pokemon. This is incredible when paired with the new Sylveon Ex because one of the core issues of Greninja is that it's often used with no Water Energy in a deck due to the game's bad Energy RNG, so it's vital that players get Froakie and evolve it into Greninja with a Rare Candy as quickly as possible.

Pokemon TCG Pocket's Sylveon Ex and Greninja Deck Explained

The new Sylveon Ex in Pokemon TCG Pocket helps a lot because it allows players to draw two cards when it's played, meaning one can hypothetically draw the entire deck in just a few turns between Sylveon itself, Eevee's Collect attack, Professor's Research, and Poke Ball. Since Sylveon Ex is a Stage 1 card, it's fairly common to get the combo going very early, and the deck also runs one copy of Giratina Ex to take out bulky opposing Pokemon while building it on the bench. The deck also doesn't use Water Energy in most cases, and instead only runs Psychic, meaning that both Sylveon Ex and Giratina Ex can attack relatively fast.

It's worth noting that Pokemon TCG Pocket's Solgaleo Ex one-shots Sylveon Ex due to its Metal weakness.

Greninja helps the strategy by dealing constant damage to opposing Pokemon, wearing them down for Sylveon Ex or Giratina Ex to take out, or drawing out of the bench some critters with Pokemon TCG Pocket's Cyrus Supporter card. Since players will most likely have either Greninja or Sylveon Ex online very quickly in a match, it's just a matter of drawing all the other cards. The worst starts for the deck are those where players have no Poke Ball, Rare Candy, and Professor's Research, and they only start with one basic Pokemon.

The new Eevee in Pokemon TCG Pocket's Eevee Grove expansion does help if players go second in such a scenario, as it will at least draw one card even if it's KOed on the following turn. However, starting with a Froakie or Giratina Ex may be rather slow. Even then, the deck won a tournament this weekend, and it also placed third, fourth, and fifth overall when used by other players, meaning it has a lot of potential in the current format, and it may even be the single best deck right now.
