A Pokemon Trading Card Game player got one of the most coveted Mewtwo cards of the moment when they opened a pack purchased at Dollar Tree. Pokemon TCG releases new expansions every year, with players getting many new rare cards to collect. However, despite being introduced to fans decades ago, Mewtwo remains a favorite of the Pokemon TCG community.
The first Legendary card featuring the Legendary Pokemon from Kanto was released in 1999 as part of the Base Set, the first Pokemon TCG expansion. Since then, Mewtwo has been featured on 47 other cards, several of which have become quite valuable. One example is Shiny Mewtwo from the Neo Destiny set, a card illustrated by Hironobu Yoshida. According to PokeDATA, a card from the first edition of this set can cost an incredible $7,251 if in excellent condition. Mewtwo cards are undeniably popular among Pokemon TCG players, and one of them recently got a valuable pull.
Pokemon Fan Makes Incredible Find at Yard Sale
A Pokemon fan goes to a yard sale and makes an incredible discovery, and is impressed by the acquisitions they managed to make.
On the Pokemon TCG subreddit, user spartandawgs19 showed off their newest card: Team Rocket's Mewtwo ex from Destined Rivals. They say they received the $5 booster pack bought at Dollar Tree as a gift from their mother and were pleasantly surprised to get the most coveted card from Destined Rivals. With a rare special illustration created by Iwamoto05, Mewtwo and Giovanni appear in intimidating poses. PokeDATA reports that an ungraded copy of this card can cost $377.33 and reach a whopping $1,411.80 if it gets a grade 10. The site also lists a raw copy of Team Rocket's Mewtwo ex sold for $865.49 on May 18, 2025.
Other Mewtwo Cards Available in Destined Rivals
While Team Rocket's Mewtwo ex is the top chase in Destined Rivals, it's not the only variant of the Psychic-type Pokemon card that players can pull. The regular print shows Mewtwo about to launch an Erasure Ball, while the ultra-rare shows Giovanni and the Kanto critter, which appears in a pose similar to that of the first Pokemon movie. The hyper-rare version features the same illustration as the ultra-rare but with a golden background, while the SVP Black Star Promotional card only changes the angle of the regular print.
While Destined Rivals is one of the most talked-about releases of the year so far, Pokemon TCG fans have even more new cards to collect. Black Bolt and White Flare hit shelves on July 18, featuring over 170 cards focused on the pocket monsters of Unova. After that, the next Pokemon TCG expansion will be Mega Evolution, which is expected to be released on September 26.
