Ubisoft has canceled the long-in-development Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake along with five other titles. Ubisoft first announced the Prince of Persia remake all the way back in 2020, but fan reaction was largely negative when footage of the game was shown to the public. Ultimately, Ubisoft made the decision to delay the Prince of Persia remake in an attempt to better align with fan expectations of the project.
Prince of Persia fans have been expecting Ubisoft to release the remake within the next couple of months, with some rumors even indicating that a shadow drop was possible. There was evidence that not only would Ubisoft be releasing the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake soon, but it would also be launching the long-rumored remake of Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag as well. Unfortunately, it seems that isn't the case.
Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown Reaches Huge Player Milestone
The popularity of the 2.5D side-scrolling platformer Prince of Persia: The Last Crown results in an impressively large playerbase.
According to Jason Schreier, Ubisoft has decided to pull the plug on the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake, canceling it along with five other games. The other games canceled by Ubisoft were four unannounced console/PC projects and one mobile game. Schreier also reported that Ubisoft is delaying another seven of its games, with the Black Flag remake believed to be one of the titles that has been delayed. These cancellations and delays are part of a "larger restructuring" at the company.
The other delayed and canceled games were not specified, but many fans are asking about Beyond Good & Evil 2 on social media. Beyond Good & Evil 2 has been trapped in development hell for ages, so it wouldn't be surprising at all if it was one of the games that was canceled by Ubisoft, but that has not been confirmed at the time of this writing.
Why Ubisoft Has Canceled the Prince of Persia Remake
BREAKING: Ubisoft is canceling the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake and 5 other games (4 unannounced, 1 mobile). The company says it is also delaying 7 games (including an unannounced project believed to be a Black Flag remake) as part of a larger restructuring. — Jason Schreier (@jasonschreier.bsky.social) 2026-01-21T16:45:19.603Z
In a follow-up post, Schreier acknowledged the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake rumors and leaks that suggested the game would be released as early as this month. It seems those rumors were completely incorrect, and Ubisoft was actually "not happy with the state of the game." This is unfortunate news for Prince of Persia fans that have been waiting ages to play The Sands of Time remake. It also effectively dashes hopes that any of the other PS2-era Prince of Persia games will get the remake treatment.
After Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands was released in 2010, the action-adventure franchise was largely dormant beyond minor mobile releases. That all changed in 2024 when Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown was released in 2024, delivering a high-quality Metroidvania adventure for fans to sink their teeth into. But while Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown earned mostly positive reviews from critics, it was ultimately a commercial disappointment for Ubisoft.
In 2025, roguelike platformer The Rogue Prince of Persia was released, and while it also earned mostly positive reviews, it's unclear how well it performed sales-wise. Ultimately, it seems as though the Prince of Persia brand simply isn't as strong as it used to be, and so fans shouldn't hold their breath for a new entry in the series any time soon now that The Sands of Time remake has been canceled.
