What did FF6 do to change the franchise? It was just a continuation of what FF4 did: a bigger, more involving story with many twists and turns, larger game world, more varied main characters, lots of dramatic elements.
It's a great game, sure, one of the series' best. But it only expanded and refined on what FF4 did first (FF5 seemed to tone down those elements a bit in favor of a focus on gameplay systems).
