I thought Guarma was supposed to immerse the van der Linde gang into the Spanish American War. But then it was short war that happened within 1898. RDR2 took place in 1899.

Unless, Guarma can stand in as the counterpart for the Philippine American War which was happening in 1899. Same tropical setting, architecture, sugar industry, even uniforms of Filipino revolutionaries. The idea of American outlaws Finding themselves fighting with under equipped Filipinos against American expeditionary forces can be interesting.
