I love it when studios take it upon theirselves to change a big part of someone's character because they think it won't go over well with this new "modern audience" but it just tends to have the opposite effect. Because their change is usually what doesn't go over well with the real "modern audience", which is still the same as the old school audience. It's just the people that cover this stuff that makes a big deal about it. Like this article.
