Promise Mascot Agency
The game is weird, wacky, and fun! I didn't expect to be so invested in such a unique cast, but the story was surprisingly deep. It didn't necessarily wow me with it's gameplay and art style, but that's not to say they weren't off-putting. It was a game with a clear identity and it managed to maintain it very well.
I found the Mascot Help Events to be a liiiittttle tedious after a while, but once you figure out how to get a decent cash flow, you can grab a bunch of Help Items to reduce how invasive the events get1
Ghost of Tsushima
I don't know what to tell you, man, it's just a beautiful game. It had sat in my backlog collecting dust for far too long, and the only thing I'm disappointed about was waiting so long to experience it! Terrific story, gorgeous world, and combat was so fluid. Absolutely loved it and absolutely cannot wait for Yotei!
Two Point Museum
I'm not usually one to get into this genre, but I found myself losing track of time playing Two Point Museum! It struck a really great balance of humor, gameplay, and enough variety to keep me interested with the multiple museum themes. Really solid game and a great way to switch off from the outside world and just get lost in an alternative life as a museum curator!
Atomfall
Atomfall's Lead system won't be for everyone, but I really enjoyed it! The ability to more or less tell the story you way was really unique and I hope it's applied in other games. With that said, I did find myself feeling that it didn't 100% hit its potential. Combat, exploration, and story were all solid, but not quite enough to really blow me away. Nonetheless, I enjoyed Atomfall and hope to see more of it in the future!
Secret Agent Clank
This is the one game I most fondly remember playing on PSP! It was great to experience a Clank-centered story, but it did lack the depth of a R&C franchise addition.
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3
The thrill of discovering you can empty the pool on the cruise ship and eventually getting the long-sought after high score will live in my heart forever. Thanks for the memories, Mr. Hawk!
Mario Kart 64
What a notoriously frustrating but addictive game 😂 from game nights with my friends to playing with my cousins, Mario Kart goes hand-in-hand with some great memories of playing couch co-op
Crash Nitro Kart
The story in this was surprisingly deep for a racing game! I didn't expect such a broad roster and an introduction of new characters, but they complemented the gameplay and various imaginative racetracks beautifully
Injustice: Gods Among Us
This was such a beautiful symphony of everything we love about fighting games and everything there is to love about DC. The story was brilliant and certainly not what I expected when I first heard it was coming out. Glad they did a sequel!
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
I desperately need a reboot on this! I never tired of LotR, and the ability to pick from the iconic characters felt so advanced at the time. Absolutely adore the franchise and this was a great addition to it.
Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time
Toys For Bob stayed true to what make Crash Bandicoot such a household name in gaming, while giving us some upgrades and fresh gameplay. It's exactly what a lifelong Crash fan like myself was looking for, and I am gutted we won't see number 5, given how good this one was!
Middle-Earth: Shadow of War
The original game was such a unique and thrilling experience that was always going to be hard to top. I wouldn't consider Shadow of War to be quite as memorable overall (aside from how it ended), but I still think it's a really solid and really enjoyable exploration into other facets of the LotR universe.
LEGO The Hobbit
I've enjoyed quite a lot of LEGO games, but this one might be my favorite. The open-world feel to it was a nice touch and I enjoyed all the little side quests. If nothing else, it was a great retelling of one of my favorite books, with that signature LEGO experience.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine
Admittedly, it's been a long time since I played this, but the fact I still have some great memories of Wolverine just goes to show how good it really was. I think it flew under the radar (at least, from where I'm standing it did) and it's largely underrated, but it was a terrific avenue for fans of Logan to experience exactly what it means to be the Wolverine. I'm looking forward to the upcoming adaptation!
Dragon's Dogma 2
DD2 has all the elements of an RPG you'd expect, and I found both the story and the environment to be really satisfying. If I was to offer critique, it would be how tedious the fast-travel system is. Using the carts is all well and good until you're attacked and it gets destroyed, then you're halfway between your start and ending point. I don't mind exploration, but if I'm using fast-travel, it's to skip it.
The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria
I absolutely love the angle taken in this game, and it's a bunch of fun to build your own little settlements and mine for resources. I do, however, find the combat to be pretty frustrating at times, and when you die it can be incredibly difficult to get your stuff back. Might be a patience/skill issue on my end, but I definitely enjoyed a lot of what RTM had to offer!
Squad Busters
+I generally don't play a lot of mobile games, but this one has taken me by surprise. It's easy to pick up so anyone can play it, the characters offer a range of playstyles, and they're constantly servicing the game to bring new collabs and game modes. There are microtransactions, as you might expect, but you can actually get by perfectly fine without digging your wallet out.
Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage!
It was called Gateway To Glimmer where I'm from, but this was the most influential game of my childhood and a big reason I game to this day! I must've played it all the way through a dozen times. Love the stunning worlds, range of characters, and really enjoyable gameplay.
WWE SmackDown! Here Comes the Pain
They just don't make 'em like they used to! I remember being so thrilled by the storylines, customization, and just general overall feel of the game. It might not be the most visually impressive game anymore, but it'll always have a place in my heart.
Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered
I long considered the Batman: Arkham series to be untouchable as far as super hero RPGs are concerned, but the first Spider-Man game definitely showed that Marvel is upping their game on the video game market. I really enjoyed the experience of swinging through New York city, and the storyline was on par with the solid narratives of Spidey that have been told before.
