See AllA 32-Year Long Dungeons and Dragons Campaign is Coming to an End
I'm curious. How is a "campaign" defined here? What does it even mean, a 30 year long campaign? With the same characters? Without skipping in-game years? How/when do they level up? The game is designed for 20 levels character development, usually achieved over the course of a few adventures. Older editions had epic level rules, but still... Or does "campaign" here mean a shared world and in-world continuity with multiple PCs taking up the mantle for various adventures (which for me is different than a campaign) Or is it different characters, but with an overall story plot - major quest with recurring villains and NPCs... Because if you call a campaign various adventures with different characters that remain in the background as NPCs after they retire, then we've also done that -- and plenty of other groups as well, I'm sure. We've also been running adventures in the same campaign setting for 30 years and some older characters from our 2nd edition days are still around in the setting as mentors or NPCs. Each adventure undertaken by our various adventuring parties become canon in our world.
I'm sure Ed Greenwood (Forgotten Realms creator) and his friends have had an incredibly long "campaign" in that sense.
But perhaps they did achieve a 30-year long story arc campaign that encompassed multiple characters and aventures, but tied together by a continuous overall plot thread. In which case, impressive indeed. 🤟
