I feel your leaving out important context when comparing Mario kart 8 sales to team sonic racing.8 is the highest selling Mario kart tsr is the lowest selling of the sonic racing series. 8 was pushed for two entire console generations and the huge marketing of Nintendo behind it. Team sonic racing came out during a low point for sonic and had a small budget for everything(the game itself, marketing etc), and no support. Compare that to now where the latest Mario kart is not as well received as 8dx and sonic is more popular than ever and the game has a huge marketing push. I think the sales will be much closer this time.

I personally found all the collaborations between sega and Nintendo to be not good for sega. Like the Wii U deal where sega had to release 3 exclusive sonic games. Or most Evidently the Mario and Sonic series which were developed by sega with some oversight from Nintendo. For one Nintendo was the one making most of the money considering sega had to pay for rights of their characters. Secondly the games were a massive waste of talent, developers who worked on both shadow generations and the new sonic racing were previously only working on the Mario and Sonic series. This means we could of been getting peak sonic spinoffs instead of the Nintendo coded slop that is the Olympic Games. Imo both Nintendo and their fans undervalue and don’t respect sega or sonic.
