Square needs to step out of their comfort zone and collaborate more with Western writers—much like how FromSoftware brought in George R.R. Martin to co-write Elden Ring. Japanese writers today often lack a strong grasp of what the global market wants. With the rise of streaming platforms, audiences are now exposed to a wide range of sci-fi and fantasy stories with strong narratives and visuals. Final Fantasy XVI was a good attempt, but it lacked balance between its characters, story, and world-building. They felt disconnected, as if each element was forced into the narrative rather than woven naturally — and it just didn’t work. The game made it clear that Square can no longer rely solely on local writers.
