See All‘I Personally Want The Player to Understand Their Choices Are Permanent’: The Outer Worlds 2 Dev on Why Staple RPG Feature is Missing
The lack of respect would not be an issue if the value and the need for the skills were understood before investing in them. But it is not possible to “spend” my points wisely when there is not enough information in or about the game. This leads to massive frustration when you find out that you need 8 points in Hack to advance the only unlocked quest in the game, and there is no place to “grind” for experience that is not just mindlessly shooting random creature spawns.
It would be fine to have permanent choices on skills that only enhance play. It is not “fine” to have skill caps on skills required to complete the game and then lock people’s choices so that they can’t progress the story.
I am currently faced with starting over to allow me to prioritize Hack, since you can’t get through the quest line on the second planet without a Hack skill of 8. The only solution would be to grind out 16k in random creature spawns, and then live with the “wasted” points in the skills not absolutely mandatory to progress the quest.
Finally, when you limit a resource to 2 per level and then only 30 levels, it is very disingenuous to force the selection of a skill just to finish the game. It really defeats the purpose of allowing a "choice" at all.
