See All8 Things Solo Leveling Does Better Than Nearly Every Action Anime
There's nothing special about this show except flashy colors... And to be honest, that is what most anime boil down to anyway so I'm not sure that's even remotely special. The protagonist is handed everything conveniently at the exact moment he needs them, he is allowed to overcome things even the show says he shouldn't be able to, merely because if he doesn't, our story ends here.
There is alot of flashy combat scenes, but none of them have any stakes or meaning to our characters. We all know protag man will win no matter what, and often times, he allows, willfully, others to be killed or endangered before he steps in to assist. How this leads to anyone saying "He is a likeable overpowered protagonist" is just admition of their own blindness to his actual behavior in the show. Infact the only thing this protagonist does to make him likeable is to take care of his sister and search for a cure for his ailing mother. But the enslavement unwilling hosts, the willingness to let others die horrible deaths, and kill those of far lesser strength than himself under the guise of... Being edgy? Being a cringe 12yr old?
Don't even get me started on the sheer lack of any decent story telling. We break rules left and right when it suits the protagonist, so RIP worldbuilding i guess. Interactions between characters often ammounts to simple posturing and nothing more.
And whilst it may be true that it has decent fight scenes (at best) they certainly aren't some new breed of visual excellence. And what's even worse is that the show misses what really makes a fight memorable in the long run. Consequences, Character growth, Stakes, and a culmination of good story telling building up to it. Instead what we get is flashy colors and Mr. Protag man saying GRRR im edgy!!!
You are free to enjoy Solo Leveling, and im not here to say you can't. I am here however to say that you cannot just say that it is a GOOD anime because by all objective metrics, it is not.
