Or maybe, every single anime or show in existence that has magic basically always makes it the most over powered thing in the world with little exceptions (yes a few shows break that mold but comparitively its a small percent) and solo leveling decided to go a different route. I mean they did more then hint at Natsu x Lucy, the exceed arc had there counter parts in a full blown relationship, they have 100% in the other arcs shown that lucy has some form of "romantic" feelings towards natsu and natsu is way more protective of lucy then any other guildmember, and with the new 100 year quest story dont they have a kid called Nasha? Im pretty sure i saw that somewhere. In one piece the most significant thing between luffy and nami is back when nami was still with the arlong pirates and luffy defends her and the whole hat scene and whatnot. I get what you were trying to do with the comparisson, but fairytail has 100% cememented that there is a romantic interest between natsu and lucy.

For someone thats not a high profile industry person or ever having to deal with this stuff, he might not have thought he even had a chance.
