Silent Hill 2
It's peaks and valleys- the first half, or maybe first third, is very interesting and incredibly well done. But as you get closer to what always seems like it could be the end, it just keeps going and going and going until the final third is fetch quests galore.
Combat gets very repetitive after awhile since there aren't many enemy types, and one of them especially will go from creepy to groan- and eye roll-inducing in a short amount of time. Combat can also be clunky and unresponsive; I died 12 times in my playthrough, and at least half of those were from the controls not responding to what I was putting in! And it wasn't instances of me being hit and thus unable to do anything, James was standing there ready to go, but completely ignoring my inputs.
I will say, though, the main story and character are more than enough to keep you interested, and the atmosphere/ambiance, and environments (well, maybe not ALL the environments, but that's talking more about the gameplay aspect) are probably the best I've ever experienced in a survival horror game. Perfectly done. Silent Hill finally looks like how we've always pictured it in our heads throughout the entire game.
And I cannot recommend enough to play this game with earbuds or headphones on, it ups the experience tenfold. I have a hard time imagining playing it any other way!
