Solo Leveling Is Anime Of The Year, But 1 Show Far Surpasses It In Quality
Frieren doesn’t rely on constant action or flashy battles to hold your attention. It’s a quiet, emotional story about what happens after the hero's journey ends. The pacing is slower, but that's intentional. You’re meant to feel the weight of time, especially through Frieren’s eyes, since she’s an elf who lives for centuries. You see how relationships shift and how memories stick with those who live shorter lives. There’s a real sense of melancholy that sneaks up on you.
By comparison, Solo Leveling is all about the hype. It’s fast paced, packed with over the top fight scenes, and centered on a classic power fantasy; going from weak to unstoppable. That can be fun, but it doesn’t leave much room for emotional depth or character growth. The main character, Jinwoo, gets stronger and cooler with each episode, but his actual personality doesn’t evolve that much. He’s more of a vessel for spectacle.
Frieren also puts in the effort to explore its world quietly but deeply. Towns feel lived-in. Even side characters get moments that feel meaningful. It’s a show that respects silence, something you don’t get often in anime. And the art, while not as flashy as Solo Leveling, is beautifully crafted with soft colors and subtle animation that matches the tone perfectly. It all just works together to tell a more emotionally resonant story.
Ultimately, Solo Leveling is great if you want excitement and pure adrenaline. But Frieren hits harder in a different way. It sticks with you. It’s less about what happens and more about why it matters. That makes it more memorable in the long run.
