I think a big part of it is to show Atreus' progression from weak, annoying snot to legitimately cool badass. He'll get there. But I don't think there is any real plan for Atreus to replace Kratos in the series. Everybody would be too upset. I'm sure he might get a spinoff or something.. Remember when Raiden replace Snake?
