The original pitch/script for the first movie was called "The God Thing" or "In Thy Image". It was Roddenberry's idea.

Star Trek did feature religion in TOS. Weddings, Christmas, "the Son of God"

It's later on when Gene rationalized his cheating that he shed religion. It's easier to not feel guilty when your cheating on your wife and doing various "pharmaceuticals"

The Latest Doctor Who Might Already Be Done With the Role

The trouble with the current doctor is he cries too much. The Doctor is supposed to be a hero, reluctant or not. This one is not.
