There's always a very diminished experience. Everything centers around online play these days. You can't play online with emulators, at least not on Nintendo servers.

They don't legally own the code of their emulators.

It is when they steal the code of emulators for their use. They just know that no little open source project can possibly afford to fight them

Except that Nintendo has also used code from said open source third party emulators. They a big fat evil corporation and need a vibe check.
