You should try it again. Plague hearts start out as dormant, and as long as you don't wake them they never send out infesting hordes, so you don't have to spend any time clearing infestations.

I started with SOD2 and then tried to go back and play the first game, was never able to get into it. The second game is one of the best zombie games out there and after the many updates is even better than it originally was.
