Yeah, we've done elevated chests. They seem to be the most efficient use of space, especially if they're within reach of the crafting.

We use dropboxes, but call them "dump chests," and if one of us is just puttering on the server alone we'll often sort dump chests or cook food for later. Saves time on adventuring days!
