First of all, most stores don't let you return anything just because you didn't like it; returns are generally accepted only for unopened merchandise or something that's damaged or the like. So you might want to have another look at the return policy, because I'd be surprised if what you tried to do was allowed. And secondly, do keep in mind that individual stores vary; having an unpleasant experience at one store in no way means every store is like that.

Also if you did get attitude, maybe it's because you gave it first. I certainly wouldn't be inclined to be friendly if you came at me the way you're speaking in this comment.

Got mine in-person at GameStop, and yeah, that was definitely the way to go. Showed up earlier than I needed to, too; I was like 11th in line and they had 45 pre-orders available. Online was a mess, but the store was very calm and orderly and organized. Very pleasant experience all around.
