I had a friend I made a fee years ago,

who like me is into 3.X.

His views as DM were similar to mine.

When I played a Sorcerer he let it go off Wisdom not Charisma.

He didn't flex on the Ranger getting 1d8 HP though, claiming they made up for it in other areas.

Can't win them all. LOL

I think 5e allows players an easier start to the game, but building as levels go on was easier and more fun in 3.X.

I'd I'd definitely say

Fighter, Barbarian, and Rogue

are easy beginner choices.

In fact I once had a friend who

liked to play as Fighter, saying

all he had to worry about was

his sword.

Ranger and Monk are fairly

easy as well. However, just

because the Ranger has nerfed

features, doesn't mean they're

that hard to play.

Players just have to remember

that Rangers are niche characters.

They shine in certain circumstances,

but don't excel all the time.

(1 of the few things they did

wrong in 3.5 was giving Ranger

1d8 HP per level, instead of 1d10

like other Warriors.)

Ranger is a good choice if

joining group that already has

other Warriors like Fighter and

Paladin, and you don't want to

do the same thing.

Paladin isn't too difficult either.

Spell casting classes are harder

to play as. I'd rate Cleric more

to the start of the list, and I'd

say Druid is even harder to

learn to play.

I know Cleric gets a reputation

as just a guy who heals, but they

can do a lot of fun and powerful

stuff.

Saying "they designated healers"

is wrong and perpetrates the

stigma of the class.

I'd say all 3 main Arcane spell

classes are about the same

challenge to play as.

I'd rank Sorcerer as slightly more

difficult because the book lists

them being based off the wrong

ability score. Sorcerers are made

as if they are a Wisdom based

class, but the people who write

the books keep saying Charisma.

SMH!

If a DM will not flex and let that

be played different, I'd rank it as

more difficult. (Though I wouldn't

play as a Sorcerer that way.)

Bards are ultimately the most

difficult class to play as.

They are (as described in 2.5

edition) "jacks of all trades but

masters of none."

New players may struggle to

find a place for the bard in

a group.

If people want advice on which

class to play as the 1st time

playing, I'd say go at it as a

as a Fighter.Then do Rogue.

After that do Cleric, then Wizard.

But pick a class that is fun.

Not saying your list is bad,

but most battles in most RPGs can be dealt with doing repeated spam attacks with weapons. Spells are rarely needed, and MP can be saved for more important fights.

I've done this in Final Fantasy and others. (The only FF that made every battle more difficult was Tactics.)

42 isn't a bad average, considering that when the franchise started it was late 80s and most of those people are much old. That means the game has been historically attracting newer generations.

Some corrections:

Rydia didn't join Cecils's party.

He was alone, and she waa the only other person. It technically wasn't a

party till she joined.

The issue with Locke wasn't his

chivalry. That's a common trait in

male protagonists. What his

backstory does reveal is why he

became a Treasure Hunte, aka

Thief which annoyed him, cause

his underlying reason was to save

his love not for money.

Creating your own party or character is one of the most fun parts of gaming. That's why D&D is so awesome. The player contributes.

More important is that good writing, good story. That's why most Final Fantasy was great.

DMs should not be working

against the party. They should

be,fairly challenging the group,

but secretly routing for them to

win, like any teacher.

Don't tell players anything that

they missed. It can be annoying.

Keep it to yourself, cause you

can use it later.

(I had a DM tell me I could have

saved money going to another

shop a few times. I sas like, so

what, I don't care.)

If a DM notices 1 player getting

more time, they should make a

point to ask others. Especially

if they're new or young or

insecure about the game.

Why would we need another tank class?

We have Fighters, Paladins, Monks, Barbarians, etc.

I'm sure people are homebrewing their own tank classes, but just to add more in the official game would be getting ridiculous.

Next, do we need another spell casting class? LOL

The Mimic is something that should be used jn just about any campaign. Put them anywhere. Greedy players always want treasure, but surprise.

Beholders are just a powerful monster that can fit in any campaign. DMs be careful cause they are tough.

There's a,whore lot more, which obviously a short list can't mention. Monster Manuela are so useful, though you can do online research.

I take a piece of paper and list the ones I think are useful at the front and nore which page it's on.

Yeah, I'd probably swap off the Barbarian as the front line guy for a Paladin in a standard 4 player campaign.

In a large group, having a Barbarian as a secondary warrior is a good idea. In larger groups, it's monotonous and boring to have simply more Fighters.

I think Final Fantasy 4 & 6 are must play games as well. Many consider these the best.

Dragon Warrior doesn't seem to get the hype Final Fantasy does, but I'm highly nostalgic about some of these games. 1 3 were part of my childhood. But 7 was a massive sprawling adventure through time.

Both Chronotrigger and FF6 show what the SNES was capable of.

There also can be an argument for FF6 that Terra is the main character for the whole game. Yes she sits out much of the WOR part (somewhat necessarily but over done maybe), however the game still highly centers around Terra, and she saves the party at the end.

But you can put your name on any character and pretend that is the main character. Thus, Edgar, Locke, Shadow, and Sabin have all been that type of main character.

The endgame of Final Fantasy IV diving deeper into the Lunar subterranean, fighting epic monster after epic monster, collecting strange and glamorous equipment, exploring who to give what to; all while getting ready to fight the biggest bad on the SNES.

That deserves a mention!

Final Fantasy 4 boasts a lot of power parties. Cecil, Yang, Edge, and various powerful magic users.

Final Fantasy 6 has a lot of characters with strong back stories, and they all can customed to what spells you want.

Breath Of Fire 2 has some really good characters to make a good party. And you don't always have to favor the same companions. Pick Nina or Bleu for your wizard, Bow or Rsnd for healer. Katt & Sten are both can boast about their speed, but their other abilities vary greatly.

Final Fantasy 1 & Dragon Warrior 3 while primitive and simple games, they allowed the player to make the party combinations they wamted.

FF1 had 4 spots for a Warrior, an attack wizard, a healer, a monk, or thief. While DW3 had a main character who was a paladin like hero who recruits 3 allies at a guild. DW3 also has a useless Goof-off class and a Merchant. Later it has a way to turn 1,companion into a sage, giving them both wizard & priest spells.
