Both melee weapons are 1 hit kills at purple rarity and two pack punches at rounds well into the 30's. I have made it to round 26 multiple times with just the knife pack a punched twice and at purple rarity to get the 2000 kills necessary for the weapon camos.

Definitely not the worst thing to pack a punch by far. You can kill the zombies with it before they even swing on you. You can 3 hit a mangler with it up until wave 30. It is definitely useful.
