See AllToday is the End of an Era for The Simpsons
This was more of a Disney decision. Originally being announced/rumored at a time when Disney was making LOADS of cuts throughout their company and licensed things. So it's not like EA may have had much choice. Their security in the game itself (possibly other ones too) had always been lacking. There were all kinds of hacks/workarounds to the system they couldn't plug. Basically if you've got a complaint, you can send it to deaf ears of the Disney company.
It may wind up being a hint that the Simpson's show itself could eventually be in jeopardy. Dedicated viewership likely has been declining for several years, but it possibly clings on to cheaper production costs. I personally haven't followed along with the show for many years. Years ago often finding it difficult to remember when it was on (because of constant shifting things), as well as the occasional annoying story we didn't care for. Then we got into the habit of never paying attention anymore to ANY regular TV series because of constant shifting timeframes, and constantly getting prematurely cancelled shows.
The Simpsons: Tapped Out Petition is Blowing Up
In case it hasn't already been mentioned, the decision to shut it down likely came from Disney, since they essentially own it through their Fox acquisitions. This past year (and bits beyond) Disney has become notorious for cancelling and shuttering all kinds of projects as they make considerable cutbacks to streamline themselves more and more. Essentially if it doesn't look like it has a chance at making considerable income it gets nixed. The only chance it might appear it could get to keep going is by some miracle management has a big shift in Disney or some company throws a ridiculous amount of money at them (that they likely couldn't recoup for several years if ever).
