Nowadays, studios run these movies through test screenings first with the sort of fan most likely to complain about the movie online. That sort of fan will be instantly hostile to any change in the casting of a character or any significant change whatsoever to an existing franchise. No amount of rewrites, reshoots or changes will mollify them. I expect that as long as Hollywood continues this practice, we will get very little that takes any sort of risk, good or bad.

Fortunately, such moribund systems always crack and shatter, ushering in new waves of popular cinema.
