Not only did I pay almost nothing for a large chunk of my Steam library, I also received a boatload of those games absolutely free through various promotions over the years, and added them thinking that I'd play them "someday". The dollar value of my library is a gross misrepresentation of how much I actually paid for those games, and consequently, the value I personally place on them.
I think there are probably a significant number of Steam users with similar libraries and that the premise of the study is therefore fundamentally flawed. Games owned versus games played is not an accurate indicator of "these people threw a lot of money down the toilet".
