MrBeast is Submitting an Offer to Buy TikTok
The issue with Trump’s executive order and the whole premise of TikTok not being banned right now is that the whole thing is straight-up unconstitutional. An executive order can’t circumvent or counteract a law passed by Congress. The federal government is also constitutionally obligated to enforce that law, meaning that the Trump administration will likely face a lawsuit from an anti-TikTok group over the failure to enforce the law and the executive order’s viability. That all being said, the law passed by Congress that banned TikTok does contain a stipulation that permits the president to push back the ban by 90 days if there is significant progress being made on a sale. If Mr. Beast is actually approaching ByteDance with a deal, the ban could be pushed back and dropped altogether if Mr. Beast purchases it. Keep in mind that the general objection to TikTok in the first place is over its national security concerns, those primarily being the collection of information by a company which may be under the direct control of a foreign adversary government and the possibility for China to use the app to spread propaganda and disinformation. TikTok, as a foreign company, does not possess First Amendment rights to free speech (which is why its lawsuits have been shot down all the way up to the Supreme Court), and neither does China. That all being said, we will see how this plays out. If Mr. Beast really does purchase the app, not only will he become very wealthy very quickly (even more so than he already is), but he will have control over one of America’s most popular media outlets. Seeing as he has stayed far away from politcal matters for the entirety of his career, it would be interesting to see how he navigates the current political landscape - something that must necessarily be interacted with in order to successfully run a social media business, or so it seems these days. In any case, the National security threat presented by TikTok will be vanquished in short order.
