This was somewhat true with Civ 5, but Civ 6 was almost universally loved from day 1. The Gathering Storm DLC was not the best, punishing you for being productive, but it was ironed out at least.

No one wants to play a worse version of Humankind.

I refuse to buy this game. They changed way too much. They were on such a good progression from Civ 4 to 5 to 6, they just dropped the ball with this game. We don't like Humankind, and they made the game way too much like it.

Narratively speaking, I think the Frozen Wilds story works best if you do it after "Deep Secrets of the Earth." The primary antagonist of The Frozen Wilds will be very new and unknown to you if you complete it prior to the mission at Sunfall, and thus you'll have less context for what is happening.

Now, I do think you should go to the DLC area ASAP and do the one side quest that allows you to modify your spear, but beyond that, let it lie in wait until after you learn all the truths at Sunfall.
