See AllOpenAI Hit With Copyright Infringement Allegations from Japanese Game Developers
What people should be aware of is, no matter who wins this, YOU lose.
If Open AI wins, it establishes more ability to use copyrighted works in America and other countries as well. And AI gets stronger and less accountable. Saying that Japan does not have the right to affect what a company in America does regarding copyright, DEFENDING FAIR USE laws. Nintendo going after Palworld is like this, they assume they have the right to tell a chinese developer what they can do outside of japan.
If the Japanese companies win it hurts fair use, it establishes precedent that Fair Use and other laws that allow parody and fan creations in other countries like America, such as pokemon or mario fan games...well those are illegal and aren't defended by fair use. The arms of the japanese legal system extend here and Nintendo get to do what they want.
No matter who wins this, you lose. Unless you Love AI and dislike japanese lawyers shutting down fan projects. Those people win in this situation. But this time Fair Use and Anti-AI are at odds.
If you want to defend fair use and people's rights to make fan projects and parody content....well you better hope Open AI wins.
Naughty Dog's New Game Intergalactic Gets Encouraging Update
Naughty Dog used to be a company I had good nostalgic feelings about. But over time they've been almost ashamed of their past games like Jak & Daxter, Crash Bandicoot, and Nathan Drake, and seem to think they only make "dark, moody cinematic experiences". I don't know, I liked the Last of Us, but the sequel just felt like an emo kid's journal about how much humanity sucks. And now this new IP is just covered in product placement. I'm sure it will be high quality, but I feel like they almost don't like making games anymore, and would prefer to make dramatic movies. Like their history is a shameful childhood they want to leave behind. Hopefully this game turns it around, but I won't pre-order. Hopefully I'm wrong.
SAG-AFTRA Files Charge Against Epic Games Over Fortnite's AI Darth Vader
For context, during the actors strike over a year ago now, SAG-AFTRA in negotiations CHOSE to abandon protections for voice actors regarding AI in order to secure protections for what they decided were "real actors". This choice benefited a good chunk of the union and actors while leaving voice actors to hang in the wind, vulnerable to whatever publishers and studios would come with down the road, like say....this exact situation.
Do your own research to get the better details, but the union CHOSE to abandon these protections so they could get more money out of film studios for their other more visible members.
This is a problem of SAG-AFTRA's own making. Frankly its shameful that they are trying to pretend they have any say on the matter and are upset about it. Unless this is a prelude to lawsuits to protect voice actors they abandoned over a year ago, this sounds like a money grab because Fortnite is popular, or just get more publicity for the union....because fortnite.
