Gene had spent his capital by that point but was probably right. What I find hard to believe is that he and Bill seemed to have forgotten a role reversal from the 70s, when Gene was writing a draft of the first film called "The God Thing" and Bill was on record as saying that the Enterprise chasing God didn't sound like a great idea.
