I think minimaps are part of modern games' lore. We're used to them and they work. In this day and age, with the ressources available to developers, not including one is an ego driven decision. At the very least make it optional. Lots of modern game let you play with the UI: what to turn on and off, where to position elements, opacity, etc. Lazy.
