As of my knowledge it was never in development as square enix said they werent interested in other remakes until after ff7 remake trilogy was finished. Wouldnt the next remake be ff8 or even ff6 before ff9 gets a rurn?

Tried the first two but we already had games like monster rancher so it was no different but the third one had a awesome story. Unfortunately dw 4 and 5 were a bust.
