I would argue about hiding from zeds at night. There are feral zombies that are more aggressive and have higher hit points but so give higher xp. These are more common at night even in early game. A smart player can take them out with little risk and level up faster by hunting at night. Certain perks can give you higher damage or gain higher xp by hunting at night. With greater challenge comes greater reward. I often do most of my hunting and questing at night.
Also, stating that there is only one trader in each biome is a little misleading. It's more that the same trader may appear multiple times in a biome but you will not find different traders in one biome. Each biome has its specific trader that will specialize in particular items. Semantics, I know.
You are exactly right in that where you spend those first points can make a world of difference in how your game plays out.
I love this game and have close to 3000 hours in it. Even with coming out of Alpha, I can't wait to see where it goes from here!
