28 Years Later, Princess Mononoke Is Still Brilliant
I saw Princess Mononoke back in 1998 around when the DVD came out from the original theatrical release. I had seen Nausicaa, but Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli had yet to make a name for themselves in the USA.
Princess Mononoke pretty much changed my mind about what animation could be. Even though I wasn't new to anime, nothing of that quality of storytelling and art had really been put out in the USA yet. It instantly became one of my favorite movies of all time. Not only that, but the dub was done with such care that it was probably the first watchable dubs that I had seen up to that point. (And I will die on that hill. I didn't say all dubs are good, I said this one in particular is. Most are trash).
I was ecstatic when I saw it was going to be re-released, and even happier when I found out it was going to be an entirely new scan in 4k.
It looked AMAZING in IMAX. I will be buying the uhd when it comes out. My only complaint was that the sound at least in my particular (admittedly) LIEMAX theater was atrocious. It was audibly distorting and clipping. The volume was right for IMAX (LOUD) but the speakers were not up to the challenge. While it looked amazing, it sounded terrible. I am pretty picky about this stuff though, but I will most likely shoot the IMAX corporate and email and complain about it. There are supposed to be standards.
But definitely go see it. Dubbed if you have to, but subbed if you can do it. Just don't go to the AMC at Southdale in Edina Minnesota.
Also, $19 FOR A MOVIE TICKET?!?!?!?
