The latest addition to the Extra tier of PlayStation Plus is Skate Story, a new narrative-driven skateboarding game with a unique art style that has earned an 85 overall rating on review aggregate site OpenCritic. PlayStation Plus is not exactly known for its day one games (certainly not to the extent of Xbox Game Pass), but it still enjoyed multiple day one releases in 2025..

Earlier this year, PS Plus Extra subscribers were treated to Blue Prince, a critically-acclaimed first-person puzzle/roguelike game that stands as one of the highest-rated new releases of the year. In the summer, PS Plus Extra subscribers were given the chance to check out co-op multiplayer games FBC: Firebreak and Abiotic Factor at no additional cost. And there was also Sword of the Sea, a gorgeous action/adventure game from Giant Squid where players surf around stunning environments while listening to one of the year's best soundtracks.

When It Comes to the Free PS Plus Games for December 2025, Some Fans Are Getting Short-Changed

PlayStation officially releases the latest PS Plus Essential games for December 2025, but some subscribers are being short-changed.

PS Plus Extra subscribers that enjoyed Sword of the Sea may also take a liking to the latest day one game. Now available to PS Plus Extra and Premium subscribers, Skate Story has debuted to mostly positive reviews from critics, securing an impressive 85 overall rating on OpenCritic. Skate Story's review scores make it one of the highest-rated games of the year so far, so it's great that PS Plus Extra and Premium subscribers can play it in its entirety without paying more than what they already do for their subscription fees. It adds significant value to the service for sure.

Skate Story puts players in the role of a demon who has made a bet with the Devil. Their goal is to skate their way to the moon and eat it, and if they do, they will be set free. It's a unique premise to say the least, supported by an eye-popping art style and all the usual skateboarding tricks that make games like Tony Hawk's Pro Skater so much fun.

PS Plus is Phasing Out PS4 Support in the New Year

Anyone interested in playing Skate Story through PS Plus should note that it's only available on PS5. Unfortunately, no PS4 version of Skate Story exists, so those that have yet to upgrade to Sony's newest console are out of luck. PS4 gamers that haven't upgraded yet should definitely consider doing so in the near future, especially if they want to get the most out of their PlayStation Plus subscriptions, as support for the older system is starting to die out.

Sony has previously confirmed that PS Plus will stop focusing on PS4 beginning in 2026. There will still be PS4 games added to PS Plus across the various tiers, but the 12-year-old console will no longer be a priority. Anyone that wants to ensure that they can play every game added to PS Plus in 2026 will need to secure themselves a PlayStation 5.

Considering how old the PS4 is, no one can really blame Sony for moving on when it comes to PlayStation Plus. It's also a good sign that PS Plus on PS5 will be supported for quite some time to come, even when the eventual and inevitable PlayStation 6 hits the market. Sony has not revealed many official details on the PS6, but the next-generation console is expected to hit store shelves at some point in 2027 or 2028. If that release window is accurate, perhaps more information on the PS6 will come to light in the new year.
