Summary

  • Horizon Zero Dawn is leaving PS Plus Extra on May 21, along with 25 other games.
  • New games are rotated in and out of PS Plus Extra on a monthly basis.
  • While players may wonder why Horizon Zero Dawn is leaving, similar occurrences have happened before with games like Spider-Man.

Unfortunately for those subscribed to the Extra tier of PlayStation Plus, it appears as though Horizon Zero Dawn is leaving the service on Tuesday, May 21. Unlike the free games that make up the Essential tier of PlayStation Plus and can be kept as long as one stays subscribed, the PlayStation Plus Extra games are rotated in and out of availability, ala Netflix or Xbox Game Pass.

New games are added to PS Plus Extra every month, ensuring subscribers always have something fresh to play. The new PS Plus Extra games for May 2024 have yet to be revealed, but fans should find out more in a couple of weeks' time. But while PS Plus Extra subscribers currently do not know which games are coming to the service in May 2024, they do know the games that will be departing.

Previously, it was confirmed that 25 games are leaving the PS Plus Extra lineup on May 21, including multiple Final Fantasy games. That was bad enough, but now PS Plus Extra subscribers should brace themselves for Horizon Zero Dawn leaving that day as well. Horizon Zero Dawn's PlayStation Store page has been updated to indicate that the game will be leaving the PS Plus Extra lineup on May 21 with the 25 previously-announced titles.

Horizon Zero Dawn is Leaving PS Plus Extra

Horizon Zero Dawn is one of the best PS4 console exclusive games, having successfully launched a brand-new franchise for Sony. The game earned acclaim for its graphics, story, and dinosaur-like robots. It's unclear exactly why Horizon Zero Dawn is leaving the PS Plus Extra lineup on May 21, considering Sony owns the game, but this wouldn't be the first time that a PlayStation game was removed from PS Plus Extra.

As some may recall, Insomniac's Spider-Man was removed from PS Plus Extra previously as well. Like with Spider-Man's removal, Sony is unlikely to provide any explanation as to why it's decided to pull Horizon Zero Dawn from PS Plus Extra. Regardless, anyone that wants to keep playing Horizon Zero Dawn will have to purchase it once it's removed from PS Plus Extra.

On the bright side, PS Plus Extra subscribers can still play the sequel, Horizon Forbidden West. Horizon Forbidden West is still a part of PS Plus Extra at the time of this writing, though it could potentially be removed at some point down the road, so fans should keep that in mind.
