Summary

  • PS Plus Extra will lose 12 games in September 2024.
  • The list of departures includes heavy hitters like Horizon Forbidden West, Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, and NieR Replicant.

The PlayStation Plus Extra game library is confirmed to lose 12 titles in September 2024, including big names like Horizon Forbidden West, NieR Replicant, Marvel's Midnight Suns, and more. Although a handful of games leaving PS Plus every month is nothing unusual, the departure of a first-party game like Horizon Forbidden West has caught the attention of many players.

Sony adds a selection of new games to the PS Plus Extra library and rotates some titles out of the service on the third Tuesday of every month. Games usually stay for upwards of six months on PS Plus Extra to allow subscribers enough time to play through them if they're interested. Moreover, PS Plus Extra also has a "Last Chance to Play" section that lists the titles set to exit the service in the following month. This section is usually updated a month in advance, but half of the PS Plus Extra departures for August were surprisingly revealed just 12 days ago, leaving a very narrow window for interested players to get to them.

In keeping with its monthly schedule, Sony has updated the Last Chance to Play section of PS Plus Extra with 12 games that are going to leave the service in September 2024, namely Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel's Midnight Suns, Alien Isolation, Cloudpunk, Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, NieR Replicant, and Spiritfarer. A plethora of Star Ocean games such as The Divine Force, Integrity and Faithlessness, Till the End of Time, First Departure R, and The Last Hope, will also be removed from PS Plus Extra next month. This roster of departures is the largest since June 2024, when 14 games left PS Plus Extra in total.

Interestingly, this marks yet another occurrence of a PlayStation first-party game leaving the company's own service. Horizon Forbidden West joined PS Plus Extra in February 2023, exactly a year after it first launched on PS4 and PS5. This was rather unexpected considering Sony's aversion to the Xbox Game Pass business model i.e. Releasing first-party games day and date on a subscription service. Although Horizon Forbidden West was far from a day one release on PS Plus Extra, it still made its way to the service much quicker than any other PlayStation first-party game.

It was later discovered from the December 2023 Insomniac data breach that putting Horizon Forbidden West on PS Plus Extra was an experiment by Sony to judge the viability of the Game Pass business model. The move apparently drove a huge influx of players into PS Plus Extra, but "flat-lined" premium sales for Horizon Forbidden West. Now that sales have seemingly dried up for the game, it's unclear why Sony will remove it from PS Plus Extra. However, some theorize that it could be in anticipation of a PS5 Pro graphics patch for Horizon: Forbidden West later this year, which might lead to a spike in the game's sales again.
