PlayStation Plus started the horror season off with Alan Wake 2 joining the Essential tier at the beginning of the month. As one of the most widely acclaimed survival horror games in recent years, Remedy Entertainment's second entry in the IP won numerous awards and ushered in the next chapter of the studio's plan for its Connected Universe. The next additions coming to PlayStation Plus' Extra and Premium tiers have since been announced, with Silent Hill, As Dusk Falls, and Until Dawn being stand-outs of the new crop.

The four games, taken as a whole, show that Sony is willing to celebrate the season (even if there's a case for the recent Resident Evil games to come to PS Plus). Along with Alan Wake 2 and Silent Hill 2 Remake, As Dusk Falls and Until Dawn both offer alternative, although no less effective, brands of horror. Most horror fans may have experienced the former, but if they haven't the latter two games, then they are a double feature in the making. Until Dawn and As Dusk Falls are cinematic narrative experiences full of tension, complex characters, and plenty of tragedy, perfectly fitting the vibe of the season.

Until Dawn is a Cinematic Narrative Classic

Supermassive's Until Dawn is an interactive narrative game, which can be divisive among gamers. PS Plus Extra is giving fans the chance to sit down with a loved one and enjoy some chills and thrills, basically meaning it's a great horror movie/game night via PS Plus. Revolving around investigations and conversations combined with split-second decisions, players follow and shape the story through various branching choices. These are often accompanied by plot twists and character reveals that recontextualize some of the previous details and interactions. Depending on what they do and how fans choose to navigate the story, characters can die, and there are multiple possible endings.

Until Dawn also featured well-known actors from outside the game industry, with recognizable names like Rami Malik, Hayden Panettiere, and Peter Stormarere bringing their likenesses and talents to the core group of teens. As one would expect in such a setup, the teens are secluded in a mountain cabin and are being hunted by a mysterious stalker. Until Dawn remains one of the best and most memorable games of its nature, so planning to enjoy it a night or two for spooky season is more than fitting.

As Dusk Falls Covers A Lot of the Same Intense Psychological Ground as Until Dawn

As Dusk Falls is the debut title from developer Interior/Night. As Dusk Falls isn't a horror work in exactly the way Until Dawn is; however, it involves much of the same kind of deep psychological drama and situations. Akin to the framework of a Quentin Tarantino or Guy Ritchie film, As Dusk Falls centers on a family who gets wrapped up in a robbery gone wrong and taken captive in rural Arizona in 1998. That easily makes it one of the best and most unique games in the PS Plus Extra catalog.

As Dusk Falls won the Games for Impact award at The Game Awards 2022 and was featured at New York City's Tribeca Festival.

As the story unfolds from the perspectives of both the hostages and the perpetrators, their histories and complex relationships come to light. Players must put themselves in the shoes of each character, deciding how to react to the distressing situation they find themselves in, and deal with the repercussions of their actions. Both also offer great replay value, as decisions ripple across the narrative, leading to various nuanced outcomes. Until Dawn and As Dusk Falls are two sides of the same unsettling coin, presenting fans with harrowing and heartbreaking moments.
