In 2023, Sony continued to expand and iterate on its PS Plus offerings, including everything from beloved indies and fun trials to major first-party AAA titles. Across PS Plus Essential, Extra, and Premium, subscribers would get access to 20+ games practically every month, which is more than enough to justify the price of a PS Plus subscription. Of course, as longtime subscribers know, some months are better than others, and some games are better than others.
There are a lot of great games on PS Plus, but 2023 saw PS Plus Extra dominate left and right with its various additions every month. Counting the nostalgic inclusions of PS Plus Premium, the marathon of PS Plus Extra games, and the timed monthly PS Plus Essential games, here are the 15 best games Sony gave away on the service this year, listed in order of their additions.

Kicking off the year was Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, among other titles. Not only was this Respawn Entertainment title heralded as a return to form for Star Wars games, but the title joined at the perfect time. Its sequel, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, would release just a few months later in April, ensuring that anyone who was remotely interested could get into the franchise ahead of the sequel. The PS Plus games for January kicked off the year strong, and it was a trend that would continue throughout the year.
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

A galaxy-spanning adventure awaits in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, a new third-person action-adventure title from Respawn Entertainment. Horizon Forbidden West (PS Plus Extra)
Added in February 2023
Read The Best War Games's Horizon Forbidden West Review
Sony would add a handful of first-party AAA titles to PS Plus this past year, and it's impossible to deny the arrival of Horizon Forbidden West. Aloy's second adventure expands on the first game in nearly every way, with its inclusion on PS Plus a great way for those who had waited on the sequel to dive into it. It originally released the same month as Elden Ring, after all, and it may have unfortunately ended up on the backburner for many folks. Adding it to PS Plus means that people could justify checking it out sooner, at least in some cases, at just the cost of their subscription. Not unlike Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Horizon Forbidden West had great timing as well, as its Burning Shores DLC would release just a couple of months later in April.

The Legend of Dragoon (PS Plus Premium)
Added in February 2023
Year after year, longtime fans call for The Legend of Dragoon to get a proper remake, but it still hasn't happened yet. That doesn't mean they were ignored, though, as Sony likely saw the love and hype around the title and brought it to the service as a result. The Legend of Dragoon is the best PS Plus Premium addition of the year, which says something with how nostalgia runs that tier. Although it shows it age, anyone who hadn't checked it out would be wise to do so. In it, players lead a part as protagonist Dart as they attempt to stop the destruction of the world with hybrid combat composed of real-time commands and turn-based mechanics.

Tchia (PS Plus Extra)
Added in March 2023
Tchia hit PS Plus Extra in March 2023, and it's arguably one of the most unique games on this list. It's a tropical open-world adventure game, complete with climbing, gliding, swimming, and boating mechanics, and it has a solid story to boat. What really drives Tchia home as a special game, however, is its main mechanic of taking control of any animal or object players can come across. Practically any animal, big or small, can be taken over by the player, allowing them to swim or fly as they see fit. Practically any item is the same, letting players roll around as a tire should they so choose. Tchia's soul-jumping mechanic is its biggest draw, and it is a big draw indeed.

Sony also brought the console exclusive Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart to PS Plus in 2023, which was one of the first games to demonstrate what the PS5 can do. Its portal mechanic really showed how instantaneously the PS5 can do dramatic shifts in graphics and gameplay, and it has great stories, beloved characters, and tons of fun to boot. It's honestly a shame if anyone has waited this long to play Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, and PS Plus does a good job of ensuring they have no reason not to now.

Alan Wake Remastered (PS Plus Essential)
Added in July 2023
Like Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and Horizon Forbidden West before it, Alan Wake Remastered was added to PS Plus at the opportune time, with Alan Wake 2 releasing just a few months after. This ensured players had a way to catch up before release or, if they haven't played it now, access the first game before playing it now. While the two games are inherently different, the connection between the stories as Remedy also continues to build the "Remedy Connected Universe" is a compelling reason to check it out.
