One of the biggest benefits of a gaming subscription like PS Plus is that new content keeps pouring in. Of course, that doesn't mean every single game released on the service is for everyone; after all, the PS Plus free games for June 2023 are headlined by NBA 2K23, an incredibly popular game among sports fans and largely only sports fans. It is supported by Jurassic World Evolution 2 and Trek to Yomi, as well as a plethora of PS Plus Extra and Premium games. Chances are, though, there are some folks who wish they had access to something a little different, and as always, the following month has the opportunity to oblige them.
Perhaps, however, the PS Plus monthly games for July 2023 are more important than in past months. It's fair to say that 2023 has been an incredible year, with players rolling right from one major release into the next. Gamers the world over have seen releases like Hi-Fi Rush, Metroid Prime Remastered, Hogwarts Legacy, Resident Evil 4, Dead Island 2, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Diablo 4, Final Fantasy 16, and much, much more. However, the industry typically enters a lull period around summer, even if recent years have seen this period diminished more and more. It is coming in July, though, and services like PS Plus could be the best way to combat it.
PS Plus and July 2023
That's not to say July is completely devoid of games, but there are certain limitations and niches. Pikmin 4 is obviously only on Switch, Exoprimal may not be everyone's cup of tea, and other games like Remnant 2 and Telltale's The Expans e may have an even more narrowed audience. For many, once they put down Diablo 4 and Final Fantasy 16, there's not going to be a lot to do in July, and it doesn't pick up again until the end of August. August has games like Immortals of Aveum, Armored Core 6, and Baldur's Gate 3 coming, but nothing major until August 22. A gaming "drought" is coming, but the good news is that it's shorter than some years. September is bringing major releases with it, and Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is set to release in October, among others.
Of course, the question becomes what to do in the upcoming slow period. Playing old favorites, working through the backlog, and checking out different releases players may have missed this year are all common approaches, but so too is relying on gaming subscription services like PS Plus. There are so many games on there that, chances are, everyone has something they may want to play during this period. However, nothing beats "new" and "free" even when something is not exactly new and free—but is to a subscriber. The PS Plus free game releases every month, as well as the PS Plus Extra and Premium games, are what stand out, and in a slow month, PS Plus needs to stand out.
PS Plus Extra and Premium added some major games in June such as Rogue Legacy 2 and Far Cry 6, but it needs to think as big, if not bigger, for every release next month. If there's a time to go heavy on PS Plus, it'll be July 2023 as it could further cement itself as a reliable, premium subscription service if it's there when the industry slows down. Indeed, one could perhaps argue that PS Plus itself has not slowed down since Sony launched the new subscription tiers, but plenty of games have been swept away by the tide of new releases. Now that the new release tide is receding for a short period, it's time for PS Plus to strike, give subscribers some truly great, top-notch games to occupy the month, and roll that momentum into the release of Marvel's Spider-Man 2.
It does remain to be seen what the PS Plus monthly games for July 2023 are, but it is perhaps more likely to have an impact on subscribers and subscribers' free time than most months.
