Summary

  • Sony's PS Plus subscription service continues to expand, with 18 games recently joining the Extra and Premium tiers.
  • Fans can still enjoy the free games for July 2023, including popular titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and Alan Wake Remastered.
  • Suggestions for future additions to the PS Plus service include Call of Duty Vanguard, Young Souls, and Death's Door, which would benefit both players and the subscription service.

Thanks to the introduction of the PS Plus Extra and Premium tiers, it feels like Sony's premiere subscription service never stops. After all, PS Plus Extra and Premium added 18 games not long ago, while the PS Plus free games for August 2023 are expected to be announced in the coming days. The constant in and out of content is definitely beneficial, especially when there's more coming in than going out.

In fact, until the August selection is ready, fans can still grab the PS Plus free games for July 2023, which include Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Alan Wake Remastered, and Endling: Extinction is Forever. It's a solid month and one that will be hard to follow up, but whether it is in August or somewhere down the line, here are some ideas that would make great additions to the PS Plus service.

PS Plus Free Game for August 2023: Call of Duty Vanguard

It would seem odd to follow up one Call of Duty game with another, but first-person shooters are popular for a reason. Plus, it would show the ongoing, if somewhat renewed good faith between Sony and ABK as Microsoft continues its acquisition of the latter. Those who haven't checked out the last few Call of Duty games ahead of 2023's new release would be able to play a couple of them on PS Plus this way, building hype and anticipation for the new reveal. Call of Duty: Vanguard sees players involved in the birth of the space forces near the end of World War 2, and while it's perhaps not the most popular entry in the franchise, it would be a great notch on the belt ahead of the new title, which is rumored to be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

PS Plus Free Game for August 2023: Young Souls

One major benefit of PS Plus is how it can be used to shine a light on hidden gems that may otherwise go under the radar due to mainstream releases or other reasons. Young Souls is one of those hidden gems that PS Plus would be a huge boon for. It tells the story of twins who attempt to rescue their foster father via side-scrolling beat 'em-up gameplay combined with deep RPG elements. Players can also unlock various story paths and face huge hordes of enemies alongside some interesting boss designs. Young Souls would be one of the best co-op games on PS Plus, if Sony were to take the leap with it.

PS Plus Free Game for August 2023: Death's Door

Lord of the Rings Developers Deaths Door

Death's Door is another indie that would benefit from being on PS Plus, while in turn benefiting the subscription service too. It sees players take on the role of a Crow whose assigned soul is stolen and players adventure beyond the Doors to track the thief. Fun combat, interesting mysteries, and more await anyone in Death's Door, and those draws would be even bigger if combined with PS Plus.

PS Plus Extra and Premium Games for August 2023 Wish List

Because of the massive PS Plus Extra and Premium catalog, this is the hardest category to even venture a guess for. However, a few games would be especially beneficial during August. Adding a few older Armored Core titles could build hype for Armored Core 6 and show fans firsthand how much the franchise how grown, while playing through classic Mortal Kombat games (or the beloved Shaolin Monks spin-off) would do the same for Mortal Kombat 1.

Throw in a few hidden gems, a beloved tactical RPG like Final Fantasy Tactics, and PS Plus Extra and Premium could give subscribers a ton of quality in August to match the releases. Of course, that doesn't happen often, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't.

  • PS5: Dredge
  • PS4: Odin Sphere Leifthrasir, Child of Light
  • PS3: Armored Core 5, Armored Core Verdict Day, Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection
  • PSP: Jeanne d’Arc
  • PS2: Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks
  • PS1: Final Fantasy Tactics

PS Plus subscribers get a handful of games every month.
