Summary

  • PS Plus Extra and Premium have had a rough time while Xbox Game Pass is on fire.
  • The latest update to PS Plus removed 22 games and only added 10 in return.
  • PS Plus has only received a couple of day one games recently, whereas Game Pass Ultimate has featured multiple critically-acclaimed titles.

The Extra and Premium tiers of PlayStation Plus recently suffered a massive blow, and it came at a time when its competition, Xbox Game Pass, is on the hottest streak of its existence. PlayStation Plus is split into three distinct tiers. PS Plus Essential is the classic version of the service, securing users access to online multiplayer and a selection of free games every month. The Extra tier is more like Xbox Game Pass in that it is a rotating selection of games that subscribers only have access to for a limited time. Premium is an extension of Extra, coming with everything the lower tiers have to offer in addition to exclusive classic games from the PS1, PS2, PSP, and PS3 eras.

Whereas Xbox Game Pass has multiple day one games every month, it's rare for PS Plus Extra and Premium to have day one releases of their own. And even then, day one games have been shared between the services on more than one occasion, like what happened with recent day one release Blue Prince. Blue Prince is a puzzle game that earned rave reviews from critics and is currently one of the highest-rated games of the year, so it was certainly a big get for both Game Pass and PS Plus. But while PS Plus Extra and Premium only got Blue Prince and another episode of the poorly-received Lost Records: Bloom & Rage as their day one games in April 2025, Xbox Game Pass featured the acclaimed puzzler alongside the likes of likely GOTY contender Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and the Oblivion Remastered shadow drop.

Some PS Plus Subscribers Are Threatening to Cancel Their Subscriptions

PlayStation Plus subscribers unhappy with recent developments claim they are going to cancel their subscriptions.

PS Plus Extra and Premium haven't received any additional day one games since Blue Prince was added to the service in April, whereas Game Pass Ultimate subscribers have been treated to the aforementioned games and titles like Revenge of the Savage Planet and the blockbuster first-person shooter Doom: The Dark Ages. Now, it should be stressed that day one games have never been a real selling point of PS Plus Extra or Premium anyway. PlayStation gamers sign up for the Extra and Premium tiers to get access to a large library of PS4 and PS5 games, and in the case of Premium, old-school games with added bells and whistles. The problem is that the latest PS Plus Extra and Premium updates have not been all that impressive, which has been especially disappointing in the wake of the service losing some of its best games.

To put it bluntly, the latest PS Plus Extra and Premium update was abysmal. In one day, PS Plus subscribers lost access to 22 games, including titles like Batman: Arkham Knight and Grand Theft Auto 5. In exchange, only 10 games were added, with nine of those a part of PS Plus Extra and only one Premium-exclusive addition. PS Plus Premium has been neglected ever since it launched, but to have multiple Premium-exclusive games like The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners games and the first two Resistance titles removed while barely adding anything in return has not sat right with fans.

Grand Theft Auto 5 was removed from PS Plus, but it's currently playable through Xbox Game Pass.

PS Plus Extra and Premium Games Removed in the Latest Update

  • Batman: Arkham Knight
  • Before Your Eyes
  • Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night
  • Enter the Gungeon
  • Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord
  • Ghostrunner
  • Grand Theft Auto 5
  • Infamous: Second Son
  • Journey to the Savage Planet
  • LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2
  • MotoGP 24
  • Payday 2: Crimewave Edition
  • Portal Knights
  • Resistance: Fall of Man
  • Resistance 2
  • Stranded: Alien Dawn
  • Synth Riders
  • The LEGO Movie 2 Video Game
  • The Sims 4: Island Living
  • The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners
  • The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners - Chapter 2: Retribution
  • Walkabout Mini Golf

Not only did PS Plus Extra and Premium lose access to notable third-party games, but Sony also removed some of its own titles from the service for reasons unknown. Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 were both yanked from PS Plus Premium alongside fan-favorite PS4 game Infamous: Second Son. Sony has removed its games from PS Plus in the past, though it has never provided a reason why. Perhaps these classics are getting remastered or re-released in some other form, but regardless, the PlayStation-owned removals made the latest PS Plus Extra and Premium update sting that much more.

PS Plus Extra and Premium Games Leaving Soon (June 2025)

  • After Us
  • AVICII Invector
  • Inscryption
  • Kayak VR: Mirage
  • Monster Hunter Rise
  • Rogue Legacy 2

Another six games are leaving PS Plus Extra on June 17, including some of the service's highest-rated games, so unless Sony comes out swinging with the new PS Plus Games for June 2025, it's likely that the negative sentiment will continue. In the meantime, the Xbox Game Pass June 2025 lineup is already looking very strong, making it clear which service is currently offering subscribers the most bang for their buck. Here's hoping PS Plus can turn things around with a solid June lineup for all three of its tiers.
