PlayStation Plus is updated on a monthly basis, with new free games given away at the beginning of the month and the Extra and Premium selection rotated in the middle of the month.
PS Plus subscribers are still waiting to hear what the new Extra and Premium games for May 2025 are, but they know what to expect from the Essential tier free games. Starting May 6, subscribers can claim the free PS Plus games for May 2025, which are Ark: Survival Ascended, Balatro, and Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun.
PS Plus is About to Get a Game of the Year Nominee
PlayStation Plus subscribers will soon be treated to a critically-acclaimed game that was one of 2024's Game of the Year nominees.
While PS Plus subscribers still don't know what the new Extra and Premium games for May 2025 entail, they do know what games will be leaving those tiers this month. PlayStation's Last Chance to Play section has outlined at least 22 games that are getting the boot on May 20 with Batman: Arkham Knight, Before Your Eyes, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, Enter the Gungeon, Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord, Ghostrunner, Grand Theft Auto 5, Infamous: Second Son, Journey to the Savage Planet, LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2, MotoGP 24, Payday 2: Crimewave Edition, Portal Knights, Resistance: Fall of Man, Resistance 2, Stranded: Alien Dawn, Synth Riders, The LEGO Movie 2 Video Game, The Sims 4: Island Living, The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners, The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners - Chapter 2: Retribution, and Walkabout Mini Golf all on the chopping block.

It's sad to see any of these games leave the PS Plus Extra and Premium tiers, but some titles stand out as especially devastating. Grand Theft Auto 5 is one of the most popular games of all time, so it being removed from PS Plus is definitely a bummer, and the same goes for the open world Batman game Arkham Knight. And while PlayStation VR2 hasn't exactly taken off as Sony may have hoped, it's still unfortunate that PS Plus is removing quality virtual reality games like The Walking Dead titles and Before Your Eyes from its lineup.
What may be especially frustrating for PS Plus subscribers is the departure of PlayStation-published games like Resistance: Fall of Man, Resistance 2, and Infamous: Second Son. It's strange that Sony deliberately removes its own games from PS Plus, but maybe there's a plan to bring these titles back with native PS5 releases. Fans shouldn't hold their breath for that being the case, however.
