Sony has just recently announced the games that will be added to Extra and Premium for PlayStation Plus this month. The Essential inclusions for September counted among them one of the most popular and thriving indie games with Stardew Valley, along with Double Fine's fantastically fun adventure title, Psychonauts 2, and Sad Owl Studios' innovative first-person puzzler, Viewfinder.

PlayStation Plus will be adding eight more games across the higher Extra and Premium tiers, and these will be available for members to add starting on September 16. Within this collection, there are three that stand out for sharing a few things in common, and could add up to being a great taste of things to come to the service in the near future.

PlayStation Plus' Extra Titles for September 2025 Include a Trio of Great Indie Horror and Sci-Fi Gems

The Extra picks for PlayStation Plus September are:

  • Conscript
  • Crow Country
  • The Invincible
  • Persona 5 Tactica
  • Green Hell
  • Fate/Samurai Remnant
  • WWE 2K25

Of these, three in particular stand out for sharing a general connection: The Invincible, Crow Country, and Conscript. These might've flown a little under the radar at first, but all were well-received by fans and critics who praised their design and execution. Conscript, Crow Country, and The Invincible are each satisfying experiences on their own, but taken together, they may hold a clue to what Sony has in store for next month.

Green Hell could be considered to be broadly adjacent to these as well, given that it's an open-world survival game, though it also has a strong emphasis on multiplayer co-op.

PS Plus Extra September 2025 May Mark the Beginning of the Halloween Season

Conscript is a top-down survival horror game with retro pixel art set during one of the most terrifying events in real history. It places players in the shoes of a French soldier, Andre, who finds himself searching for his missing brother during the famously devastating and bloody Battle of Verdun in World War 1. Created entirely by solo developer Jordan Mochi, Conscript is a truly intense experience that captures the feel of classic survival horror through a modern lens.

Crow Country seems comparatively more lighthearted on the surface, but veers into darker and more supernatural territory. It's a PS1-era throwback, utilizing the "de-rez" graphical presentation that has been gaining popularity in recent years, especially within this genre, similar to Alisa and Fear the Spotlight. Investigating the titular run-down amusement park, teenager Mara Forest seeks to uncover the truth behind what happened there. Like Conscript, Crow Country hits many of the old-school notes along with its own welcome modern touches to make it more accessible.

Finally, 2023's The Invincible is a first-person exploration and puzzle-based adventure taking a sci-fi angle in the vein of titles like Observation. Based on prolific Polish author Stanisław Lem's 1964 novel of the same name, The Invincible drops players onto an alien planet as astrobiologist Yasna, where she must search for her missing crewmates and find a way to escape being trapped on Regis III . With an isolating atmosphere, choice-based narrative, and gameplay peppered with puzzles, The Invincible offers a gripping and tense ride.

The Invincible is published by 11 Bit Studios, whose latest game, The Alters, also happens to be a mind-bending sci-fi experience.

These games coming to PS Plus now both give fans a chance to check them out if they initially missed them, and serve as excellent appetizers for the looming scary season. But beyond that, they could potentially be setting the stage for more widely recognized AAA horror games like Resident Evil Village or RE4 Remake, both of which have been consistently requested by PS Plus members, to hit the service next month.

Whether that happens remains to be seen. In the meantime, each of the above games is a perfect choice for PS Plus to kick off the scary season early, and hopefully pave the way for more to come in October.
