Sony has kicked off October by releasing new system updates for both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, which are now available to download for all users worldwide. Unfortunately, just like many of the consoles' previous updates, Sony hasn't made any significant changes, as the PlayStation 5's 25.06-12.02.00 update and the PlayStation 4's 13.02 patch are once again focused solely on "security fixes."

The PlayStation 4 may be well over a decade old now, but Sony continues to release occasional firmware updates to ensure that those still using the console remain safe when playing online games. With AAA titles such as the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 still supporting the PlayStation 4 on release, it's no surprise that Sony continues to ensure that the console remains safe and playable for its users around the world. The most recent update for the PS4 was only released back in September, bringing improvements to the messages and usability on some screens.

PS4 and PS5 Both Get New Updates

In the early hours of October 1, Sony rolled out a new firmware update for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. The former has now been updated to version 13.02, while the latter is now operating on version 25.06-12.02.00. Unfortunately, there's not much to shout about for the two updates. According to the official patch notes for both (spotted by MP1st), which can be found further down this article, the two firmware updates are merely for security fixes and nothing more.

Those who are still rocking the reliable PlayStation 4 but are looking to upgrade to Sony's flagship console will be pleased to know that the company has just begun rolling out a new version of the PlayStation 5 with some big visual upgrades. The console's centre has ditched the glossy design in favor of a matte black finish, and the PS5 Slim Digital Edition is approximately 4.23 ounces lighter. Unfortunately, there is a downside to this new model, as it appears to come with 825 GB of storage space, as opposed to the previous 1 TB.

Thanks to Xbox's continued efforts to bring its first-party games to the PlayStation 5, Sony's console is quickly becoming a must-have for gamers. Titles such as Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Forza Horizon 5, Gears of War: Reloaded, and many more have made the jump from Xbox to PlayStation in recent months, and it doesn't look like it will be slowing down anytime soon. Last week, Xbox confirmed that yet another first-party game will be coming to PlayStation, as Microsoft Flight Simulator will release on PS5 on December 8, 2025.
